Working with the inaugural Norwich History Festival, I designed and illustrated their 16 page printed brochure. To go with the first years theme of ‘Rebels & Radicals’, we wanted to focus on Norfolk and Norwich’s historical figures with Norwich history being at the festivals core. Figures such as mystic and anchoress Julian of Norwich, rebellion leading Robert Kett, prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, and many more were at the centre of my designs.
To create an edgy and eye catching image for the festival I illustrated these figures with punk and rebellious inspired accessories such as badges and jewellery. The colour palette also links back to Norwich with the city’s iconic green and yellow colour combination, paying homage to Norwich City FC. Moreover, the yellow is a deeper shade to also represent Norwich’s famous Colman’s Mustard. When designing the text for the festivals theme of ‘Rebels & Radicals’, it was very important to me to create a visual language that combined old and new ideas by mixing more traditional typefaces with bold contemporary letterforms.
